The P series pistols are, without a doubt, the most under-rated pistols ever made. I have owned at least a dozen over the years, and can't recall a single time any of them ever jammed. Just so you know, that is not a "pre Mark 1". That is a Ruger Standard Auto. Ruger made the Standard Auto, and when he came out with the adjustable sight model it was dubbed the Mark 1, and they both where made at the same time from then until the advent of the Mark 2.
