Need help with serial number

Post by Geareno76 »

I have a 1979 Ruger .357 magnum security 6 & I can't find any info about it when I run tge serial number on Rugers site. I know it's made in 1979 dye to the first 3 numbers 154. Tge entire serial number is 154-23674. It the stainless steel 4 inch model but I'd appreciate any more info. My father in law gave it to me as a wedding present 23 years ago

That's what I call a wedding present, according to the serial number your Security-Six was made in 1978, known as GA-34. Unless theres something odd about it to add extra value to it, what you have is what I consider a great revolver that will outlast you and future generations. You can request a letter from Ruger for $10 that should tell you when and who it was shipped to. Feel free to share pics.

Ruger's serial number lookup page only goes back to about 1981. That's the earliest shipping date I've found anyway. The site only works with serial numbers that were digitally entered through Ruger's system originally. So 1981 and earlier you would need to use Ruger's dates of manufacture list for the Security-Six series.

Ruger’s web site serial number page goes back to the very beginning.

However ….. if your gun is before about 1981, it will say not found but do not quit!
Scroll down a bit and there is a dialog box you can open with all the older guns on it.

Say you put in the serial of a 1960s 357 Blackhawk. Scroll down, open the box, select 357 Blackhawk, click on it and your date range will appear.
