#1 question

Post by johnc »

have wanted a #1 for years since hunting buddy had one in the 70s. since i will probably not be buying any more guns, i pulled the trigger and have a nice barely used one from the late 90s in 30-06 on the way in. says it has a set of ruger rings with it. do #1s not take scope bases? i only have like maybe a dozen hunting rifles so this is a want not a need, but i've never even held one before so i'm excited to get it in and play with it. they like any reload recipes in particular?

Only a dozen? I am no expert on the single loader No.1 rifles, 17 have lived here, only 16 remain. I like the Ruger supplied rings, they seem to work fine for me on both No. 1 and M77 magazine rifles. Factory rings lock into milled slots. If you want, can go another directon with other things like rails, other bases, rings...never saw the need myself to do so.

ok, more questions..............
its here. #133-387xx. beautiful shape. 1" rings are on sight ramp. supposing i wanted to open sight it, are rear sights still available?
if i wanted to put on a big 50mm scope, would the standard rings on it now be high enough to clear the bbl from the front of the scope?
i am guessing its just a standard model #1 as no engraving or special markings etc on it.
i have read that theres a 50/50 chance a #1 will be accurate w/out bedding it. i have bed a few rifles, not many, so am willing to do so if it won't MOA. any special quriks doing so on it?
sorry for all the questions.
oh.......i loaded a few 150 gr speer hot core SP over 47gr IMR 4166 just to give it a try out. will switch to varget if that doesn't work out.

I have owned a few and never had one that did not do what I needed never had to do a bedding job or anything else. Maybe I was lucky.

1) ruger 1 rear sights are readily available at numerich or brownells that will fit your quarter rib

2) a 50mm objective might fit with standard height rings but may have to be pushed forward to clear the quarter rib. if the sight picture is not good that far forward you can always go to high mounts (number 5 rings). buy them at shopruger.com

3) I've never found the need for bedding the no 1s and free floated barrels don't seem to help group size. you can check that by removing the fore end and resting the gun on the hanger. in my opinion the group size has always been better with a bit of barrel pressure. Hicks accurizers for number 1s have been around awhile and are based on that theory. most of my number ones will do moa depending on the cartridge. for example all my 22 and 25 calibers can all do moa but i dont expect my 45-70 to be that. your 30'- 06 should be close as mine is a bit over that, my 300 WM does moa, my 338 is 1.5 moa. however moa is dependent on definition. if you expect moa accuracy shooting 5 shots one after another you might not achieve it, but if you shoot each round from a cold barrel then yes it might get there. no 1s have tendencies to vertically string due the stock barrel pressure and if the quarter rib contacts the receiver. i have effectively reduce the stringing by using a rubber o ring under the fore end stock screw in order to reduce the increase in stock pressure as the barrel heats in my 1 v's. lets be realistic it's a single shot, not a repeater, for 30-06 your not going to get more than a couple shots at most at a big game animal.

just my personal observations from shooting and messing with allot of them over the past 30 years....

i appreciate all the infor! i ordered a set of lepould med rings for a 44mm scope from midway. came in with one high and one medium in the container. called em the best they will do is send me the correct set and me shipping the wrong one back. told em its hunting season and i need em asap. no dice. they won't expedite shipping even though they sent out wrong rings. i realize its probably not their fault but i have been doing business with them for years. they don't care. never again.
so....have to wait to see how well it shoots.
also.....i understand very well shooting from a cold bbl to achieve a good group. thats not real world shooting and i don't do it. but...i do know that more one "testing" for accuracy in a gun rag has been done that way.
