Non-prefix stock with a strange checkeriing pattern

Post by gewehrfreund »

I recently acquired this somewhat weathered non-prefix No. 1 stock (sn 4831) and am puzzled by the checkering. The stock appears to my educated eye to be original. The contours are all correct, so it hasn't been sanded down and the checkering re-done. It had a Ruger grip cap that fit perfectly and a Mershon pad that fit perfectly.
This looks to be the original checkering. It has "A2" under the grip cap, so not sure what that might mean. Whoever did the work was talented and not an amateur; it's well executed without any obvious errors and quite an intricate and difficult pattern to have pulled off.

Any insights appreciated.
