Grandson Ruger No 1

Post by spickett »

My grandson’s first birthday present is going to be a No 1. He lives in Florida but I hope he’ll hunt some deer in Vermont some day. What would you choose for a number 1? And don’t say buy him a different one each birthday lol. Thanks Shaun

My 15 year old grandson carries a Ruger No.1 in .357 Magnum, one of the California over runs that does not carry the markings. He practices with .38 Special ammo and shoots deer with my .357 Magnum hand loads. I mounted a Leupold 2.5 X 8 power scope to this rifle. The rifle carries well with a 22" A weight barrel. I am sure others will suggest a different caliber and model, but in Ohio we must shoot straight wall pistol cartridges. I shoot a .44 Magnum No.1 with a 20" barrel. I target shoot with .44 Specials and hunt with my own hand loads in this rifle. Brass Frame/Lee

I agree with the 357, my grandson last year shot his first deer with it at age 8. This year he shot shot a 7 pt with it. Uses 38 specials for practice (very low recoil) and the 357 mag for deer. I even had a shortened stock made for it so it would fit him better. Although this year he grew and uses the standard stock. Hard thing might be to find one, but they do show up on Gun Broker from time to time.
