This is one of the original "full cylinder" Maximum prototypes. This gun was featured in an article by Rick Jamison in December '83 shooting times. The side bar article showed Joe Callahan, who was head of the Maximum ammunition project at Remington shooting this gun.

Thanks for sharing, it's a collector's dream laying hands on the prototypes. You are the man when it comes to the Maximums, keep up the good work.

I think it is time for an article with lots of pictures from the man who knows them best, (Jack C.)!

Does the SRM stand for Sturm Ruger Maximum?

I would say yes. Ruger's way of giving acronym's to some of their models. The Bearcat part number sequence is "PR" for pocket revolver. The original Single-Six part numbers started with an "R" for "REVOLVER". Then when the .357 Blackhawk came out the part numbers were "MR" for "Magnum Revolver", etc. It is interesting that on the earliest Single-Six and .357 Blackhawk shipping sleeves, the sleeves were also stamped only with "REVOLVER" or "MAGNUM REVOLVER". Neat stuff! (to me anyway!!!).
