Rare Tricolor?

Post by Ruger8r »

This Tricolor has a round gate and round dimpled ejector rod button like an extremely rare gun described in the Reference. Could it be the real deal?

"Parts are parts"..........upgrades available from SR.......build information and serial number indicates parts change out by some owner after purchase.

My first thought is that this gun has had the round gate and probably also large button ejector rod added to it sometime after it left the factory. The earliest round loading gates for the Single-Six by Ruger had a very poor bluing... I don't see that on this gate. A person could always get a letter on that serial number from the factory, but it would have to letter no earlier than March 7, 1957 since that is the day two flatgate Single-Sixes are known to have left the factory, one with a flat loading gate and one with a round loading gate.
Roundgate Tri-colors do exist, but so far they are only a few two digit guns as well as 200100, which left after that magic March 7, 1957 date.

Thanks, gents.
I thought that SN might be a little low. It is interesting that a gun with such a large casting void in the cylinder frame would leave the factory so I wonder if that may have affected the ship date.
The photos below are of another one with a SN (204019) that falls within the range of Tricolors shipped with the updated ejector rod button. The round gate was added later, no doubt, as the bluing looks pretty bright. The gun is in really great shape except for some nicks in the bottom of the grip frame. There is also a casting flaw right there that I'm surprised passed inspection. I like it anyway. I've made an offer on the gun and waiting to get things sorted.
Regarding the information on SN 204949 in the Reference, does that mean that, although records indicate it was shipped, its existence is not confirmed?
Thanks, again, for all your input. Your comments on this gun will be much appreciated - I need to decide how hard to go after it.

Chad, can you comment on 204019 pictured above? If it is one of the factory upgraded ejector rod guns does that add value? Thanks, mucho.

The tri-color with large button ejector rod is more scarce than the small button gun, but at this time I don't believe that one brings a premium. You might try getting a letter on it though. I used to have 204948 which was a correct flatgate, but also had 204949 in my notes.... always tried locating that one because it was noted with roundgate and had an appropriate ship date for a round loading gate.
