John reported 38244 was inspected on April 9, 1956 and shipped as a plain revolver on April 13, 1956 to a distributor in Illinois.

Be sure to compare the nuances of the engraving with those in Dougan's Engraved Single-Six book.
I would be curious also to see a pic of the signature on the barrel.
Saw another gun just like this at a late 1980's Monroeville, PA show, serial number 88884 which was also in a genuine RSSE case. I would not be surprised if Jerred did a few Single-Sixes that were not on Ruger's books, but if so, these would not be considered factory engraved Single-Sixes.
Once the pattern was developed Ruger sent the guns to Jerred in batches of up to 40 guns, usually all consecutive. With around 50 percent of the RSSE being reported to date, to see one in a serial range that is completely away from the other known blocks is really unusual, so unless that letter comes back that says it was a factory engraved gun, I would say this one was done outside of Ruger's contract.

Something else that I must add, once collectors discovered CHJ was still alive and well in Fulton, New York, he was asked by several to engrave Ruger SA's in the same patterns he did with Ruger. His son Jerred, Jr. also engraved in the same patterns, but I believe these are marked with a roman numeral II under the CHJ barrel signature.

Chet15...Since 38244 was shipped as a plain revolver to a distributor in Illinois, I agree it is not a factory engraved Single-Six. However, it is still a nice example of a Jerred-engraved revolver and that is why I purchased it (at a price significantly less than a factory engraved example).

Doc, I too have an engraved Jerred Ruger which I am very proud of, even-though it will not letter. He was a great engraved.

See the WBR letter on page 120-121 of Dougan's Compliments of Col Ruger. Also, letters on page 127 and Jerred's reply on page 129 with regard to NOT engraving the Ruger pattern on customers Single Sixes[/b]. See Ed Nolan's letter on page 188 releasing Jerred from this agreement. Nolan advises "we will refer all consumer inquiries concerning "Engraved Single-Six" revolvers to you". JCD notes that he believes that about 40 Single sixes were engraved by Jerred after 1958 (bottom of page 121).
