Until recently, I was the care taker of the early serial number "40" Ruger Revolvers. From a family written book about one of the first Ruger distributors "Gopher Shooting Supplies", in MN, I learned that Clarence Purdie and his 3 sons received subscription guns from Ruger. Dean Purdie received number 40 which were all sold prior to his death. His brothers and father, Clarence received # 39, 57, and 58. My collection included the RSS. Factory letters remain with the collection and show that the RSS, BKH3 and BKH4 shipped together in August, 1957. I also owned the S47 and the Hawkeye. All these guns remain as NIB with their original numbered boxes.
Gopher was a supplier of firearms, accessories for Trap shooters, and other items listed in their annual catalogs. The name of the family book is titled THE LENGTHENING SHADOW. I communicated with Dean Purdie, Vice President of the company, after he sold his guns. I searched and located these guns along with the No.1 rifle and the Standard Auto, #0040. This collection is now in the hands of another well known collector. Brass Frame/Lee
