Some new info I guess I didn't get posted here.
There are exactly 71 pinto guns. I am pretty sure I know why they were made. Because serial number 38-14533 shows as a model 0357, the only one like it. Pretty sure it was completely blue because the serial number is also within a bunch of other blue .357's. Although nobody at the factory ever said what configuration the gun was in, they did say it was shipped to the Newport plant to be scrapped. In my opinion it was the only blue 5-1/2" .327 Blackhawk made.
And therein lies the answer to why there are 71 pinto guns... because I believe Ruger cut at least 72 .327 cylinders out of chrome moly steel. The pinto's are the guns leftover from that run. The 0357 must have been intentional... because the pinto guns are numbered quite a bit after 38-14533.

Looks like 38-24005, in the link above, is also a 5.5 inch .327 Blackhawk. The seller and Ruger SN lookup call it a model 0356 shipped in 2013.
