NM SBH Box - 1980 S410N (I think)

Post by 06dilly »

I have a 1980 (SN 83-70xxx) NM SBH and am working out the box it would have come in. First, I believe this is a S410N gun as it is 10.5" barrel and is not the bull barrel (S411N). Assuming all of that is true, am I looking for the brown box with a Ruger label on top?

I'm doing a better job conducting my own research now that I was reminded of my larger reference guide from Chad but sometimes I still stop to check with the experts.

Then, assuming that's the box, are these rare? Hoping to match one up to make this a complete package.

Many thanks!

Think you need a/the longest yellow one piece box. The brown generic box was used to ship returned guns back to the owner............I have always thought your gun to be a rather unsung rare piece, as they made few with the taper barrel and ramp front sight........ 8-)

That is what I was thinking as well. The box is “18 long. I see them from time to time. The S410N was produced from ‘79-81 I believe. The Stainless version (KS410N), a one year wonder is even more more scarce.

There was a box label for the S410N on GB. Is was going for $12ish, but never sold. Unlabeled yellow 18” boxes come up from time to time.

Thanks guys. I did buy that label (unless there was a second one). I just realized that the Rene notes indicate a brown box on the early ones but then a yellow and black hinged box after 83-56676.

So maybe I have an easy one as an 18” yellow box sure seems like something I’ve seen a lot of. Thanks for helping me narrow my search!

Very nice Stainless BTW!

Ok, I found a picture for one of the brown boxes. Definitely not the ones you see for returned guns. This is from an active GB listing for a 1979 gun, SN 83-05xxx. Makes sense now.

So mine was made just after these and the yellow box will work.

Was fun to find this one.

When the New Model Single-Six came out in 1973 Ruger didn't have a traditional looking box for that, so shipped them in white hinged boxes with an end label that described the model. At somepoint, probably somewhere in the 65-prefix that box was changed to a plain brown hinged box.
So those are actually the same boxes used for the 10-1/2" Super Blackhawk when it was first introduced. Shortly after production began Ruger began printing them with the eagle logo and word Ruger.
I'm pretty sure though, the subject gun of this thread is late enough in the 83- prefix that it should have been shipped in the yellow hinged.

Thanks Chad! Once I reread your notes in the RENE deck I saw the serial number you noted where the brown boxes likely stopped. I'm sure I'll find a long enough yellow hinged box now. Articruger says his is 18" long. I've seen a few for sale, but so far all have dates on the back that are dated after this one.

Many thanks!
