Possibly go with your original thoughts with the .22 cases, but when you mount it, put some small "spacers" on the back to push the bottom out a little so it tilts back a bit so that they won't fall off. Or, cut the dowels at the rear at an angle so they angle up a bit. Personally, I'd go ...

Sad news - a ROCS member has passed
Just heard that ROCS member Gene Links (forum member "LIBERTY FOREVER" ) past away in late May 2025 from cancer. He was a retired US Army Colonel and a dedicated Ruger owner and ROCS member. He will be sorely missed. Rest In Peace my friend.
