Re: Special No.1 ?
If you're willing to divulge the full (i.e. on the breechblock) serial number, I'm sure the knowledgeable folks here (and there are more here than at rugerforum.net ) will be able to tell you more about it.

Re: Ruger Letters
Absolutely no change since August! That seems a bit extreme, but it is what it is. I sent for two letters back in January thinking things might have loosened up a little, but no go. CT needs to get its act together re: this issue.

Non-prefix stock with a strange checkeriing pattern
I recently acquired this somewhat weathered non-prefix No. 1 stock (sn 4831) and am puzzled by the checkering. The stock appears to my educated eye to be original. The contours are all correct, so it hasn't been sanded down and the checkering re-done. It had a Ruger grip cap that fit perfectly and a...

Very nice! After the BH, the AH is my second favorite non-prefix variation.

Re: #1 Barrrelled Acton 7x57
Brownells was still selling barreled actions in the '90s. When they were getting out of them (or Ruger stopped marketing them), an LGS I used to haunt had several that were very tempting, including an RSI in 7x57. I thought that would be the bees knees with a 1A wood set on it, versus the RSI wood.

Re: no 1 sight question
My books show the RSI first cataloged in 1984 or 85, so it might be safe to assume this is when the change to the fluted front band occurred and why no RSIs exist with the unfluted band. That is to say, I've never seen one, but I wouldn't be surprised if one showed up in typical Ruger fashion, using...

Re: no 1 sight question
I don't know exactly (nor does anyone else I'd guess), but based on what I've seen in my travels and my own rifles over the years, it seems to be sometime in the mid-1980s. As with all things Ruger Number One, there are no hard an fast rules, exact dates for changes or verifiable records (i.e. never...

Re: 256 WIN MAG
Not really. . .The only two guns made for the caliber. Kinda cool if you ask me.
Your quest is not over!
Thompson Center chambered their Contender for 256 Win Mag. and I'm pretty sure that Universal carbines (M1 clone) were also chambered in it for a short time way back when.

Re: No rifleman here.......
Two nice rifles there.
I could start a thread titled "No Pistolero here . . . " and show my S&W Model 17 and 41 (2 of the three handguns I own).
