Please help me understand why all of those dual cylinder SC4 guns are not all called SC4X. I see where Dougan mentions that the shipping documents refer to them as both SC4 and SC4X. These supers get a little confusing!

I think they leave the "X" off because when the Super Single-Six was introduced it was a dual cylinder gun and the vast majority of the Super Single-Sixes were shipped as convertibles with both cylinders. JMHO

All SC4 that I have seen & heard of were all with 2 cylinders & as Bill said above I have not seen a Super Single Six with out two cylinders from the factory. But that being said I have seen alot of them that have only one cylinder because the owner lost or misplaced the other cylinder & they are looking for a cylinder to replace it.

Sorry I missed this question from a few months ago.
Yes! All Super Single-Sixes were convertibles (with a couple of exceptions).
The catalog number for the Super Single-Sixes was SC4, SC5 and SC6. The "C" is the abbreviation for "Convertible". Simple as that.
The exceptions are few factory nickled Super Single Sixes that were produced.
The reason they were nickled is that the frames turned a nice purple color when they came out of the bluing tanks. So most of the purple guns were given a better polish and then nickled. Some are convertibles, some are LR only.
The same goes for the purple guns that were set aside to be nickled but weren't. Yes, they were also given a better polish in anticipation of being nickled. But the nickle project wasn't an easy task so the remainder of what had been polished were shipped in April 1967 as "S" guns, factory second. And they were stamped with a small "S" on the bottom of the cylinder frame ahead of the trigger guard. All of those high polish purple guns also left the factory as LR only.
Then in the 555xxx range, Ruger did produce a few Magnum only Super Single-Sixes, model SC6M.
JD's book is incorrect that there were standard production Super Single-Sixes shipped as LR only. I think when he looked at the records he noted that some of the ledger entries were marked with an X and some weren't for the Super Single-Six. But that would be easy to do when you are also marking "X's" for the for the fixed sight Single-Six.
Again, the "C" in SC5 for example is the abbreviation for "convertible".
You can tell if your Super Single-Six is a convertible or not as the last three digits will be scribed in electric pencil on the front of the cylinder.
