just picked up a 1A CHP over run 357 Mag (no CHP etching). I was wandering if anyone knows how many of these were made? The RENE Reference mentions them, but does not give an estimate on how many were made...

1820 CHP’s and 180 non-. That’s about as good a guess as you’re going to get.

Ruger won't tell you how many this or that they have made, but people on forums that I access and knowledgeable souls I talk to who would know-if anyone knows, have stated this in the past and I tend to believe them since they have been correct on other issues. But as I said---best guess. I am somewhat of a No.1 collector and have four of the little .357's, sweet pieces of machinery. Regards, 021

I still really disagree with that number.
I have seen by far more non-marked CHP's than those with the bicycle wheel on them.
180 isn't much. In fact, you'd be a lot more hard pressed to find a 6-1/2" .41 Mag. Blackhawk with factory installed brass grip frame of which there were supposedly 160 made.
Just noting my observances.

A good question.
The hitch in that would be that of those that were supposedly sold to the CHP, how many of those remain in CHP gun safes?
I wouldn't be able to hazard a guess. Other then I've noted probably at least twice as many non-marked #1's in .357 as I have BKH42B's.
And the next thing is, the BKH42B sticks out like a sore thumb. The #1 not so much, especially without having the CHP rollmark.

I've had a few of the both the overrun as well as the Highpatrol model and in either case was always a tough sell, not many folks wanted a 357 magnum in a single shot rifle, for the MOST part, they were NOT collectors, and this was always at the OGCA over the years :|
in fact I recall my gunsmith rechambered one to 357 Maximum, and NO, did NOT "remark" the chamber,,,,never did with the 32 H&R Mag when he punched them out to 327 Fed Mag......hhmmmmm...so they are out there
