NRA Whittington Center No 1

Post by Bob257 »

Hello everyone my name is Bob and I am new to ROCS. I posted on the new Membership section but I guess I should be here in the single shot rifle section since my passion is the No 1. I think (with the help of my wife) I figured out the add picture thing. If anybody out there can tell me anything about this NRA rifle it would be appreciated. I found it in N.E.Pa. this past April in a small Gunshop. The story is a guy won it (probably at a NRA function) and when he passed the family sold all his guns. Months or years later they found one of those $500.00 metal rigid airplane gun case with this rifle in it buried in the back of the closet not anywhere near where the other guns were. Brought it to a friend’s Gunshop and I bought it. So if anyone can tell me anything about it please do. Called Ruger, NRA, the Whittington Center and a few engravers across the country but no definite information. Ruger told me it came out of the factory as a 30-06 (but now a 270 Win). Bobby Tyler said it looked familiar and thinks it went though his shop quite a few years ago but does not remember when. Between the gorgeous wood / checkering, the engraving, story behind it and the price I just had to buy it. The S/N 132-19644 which I would think woul be around 1981 but Ruger on a search on the number says different. You guys know what I am talking about. I hope the pics come thru.

That is exactly what I said when I first saw it. It really stands out next to most of my other No 1’s that we made during the recent “wood drought”. Also love the checking especially behind the receiver.

Bob, the RENE (Red Eagle News Exchange) Reference of Ruger Firearms does show that serial number as being produced in 1981. Sometimes the Ruger generated s/n listing isn't quite right (as you have seen).

In this case a letter from Ruger ($10) would be your best bet. You can find the form on the Ruger web site. When you send it in tell them what you would like to know and they will go out of their way to find out as much as possible. If you give them any info you have that helps them a lot. Ask who it got shipped to, with that info it gives you another lead to follow.
