Chad & Douglas,
I would suspect the photos in the article are Factory provided. I doubt that O"Connor received his # 20 in time for photos. If he wrote of shooting one, I suspect it was a Prototype. Neither Terry or I are aware of any X- prototypes, a few of the very low numbers were shipped quite early. The Pete Brown #23 did have vertical rings.

Good point.
I wonder if the picture in the article matches one of Ruger's press kit photos from the time period.
The earliest pic in a catalog was in the SR-1-69R and it is a different gun, with horizontally split rings.
The pic of the top of the receiver isn't in the catalog either.

Thanks for the info regarding the 1969 catalog. When I started collecting Ruger catalogs, I picked 1968 as the starting point for my collection. The 69 was easy to find, but after many years, I still haven't acquired a 68 catalog. I picked 68 because I always assumed the 68 introduced the M77. Does the 68 intro the M77, without showing a photo, or does it not even mention the M77?

There is not a 1968 Catalog! 1967 has major coverage of the No.1.
There may be 2 versions of the '69.

Thanks CLN. Now I know why I was having such a hard time finding one.

I have only seen one version of the 1969 so far, "SR-1-69R", then the next one I know of is dated 3-70.

Acquired and read this article. It’s well worth the effort if you are a Model 77 person. O’Connor humor, detail, Wm. Ruger insight, overall information are unparalleled. Thank you for bringing to my attention!
