Is there a story behind why the bolt has this hole? How rare are these bolts?

Not yet, but I found one online I would like to buy. Just need to save up for it. Was just curious since I've never seen nor heard anything before seeing your post.

It is pretty unusual for something like that to be discovered fifty-some years after they were made. Are you sure that was done by the factory?

There should be a reason for the hole. Are you able to determine if it is for gas relief?

It's not a different pin than normal...the hole just goes all the way first through...I thought it might be a try at an easier bolt assembly??
