In RL Wilsons book, Ruger and His Guns, it was stated that Ruger had the opportunity to buy at one time or the other almost every other big name gun company in America, and that he turned them all down. This letter would indicate otherwise, as in he actually did put in a bid for S&W! Learn something new everyday!
