Until the Mark I Target came out Ruger's .22 pistol did not have an official title. Ruger had just produced several prototype target pistols (1950). These pistols were serial numbered X3 thru X32 (all numbers were not produced). These pistols were roll marked just like the original 4 3/4 in. pistol. The folks at the American Rifleman's Dope Bag had named Ruger's original pistol the "Sport Model". Hatcher was sent no. X5 (target) for testing. Soon after this Dope Bag report Ruger named the STANDARD AUTO & the MARK I TARGET.

This is very interesting that the American Rifleman folks named the Mark I. Great article.
