I finally acquired a donor rifle with less of a collectability factor that I was comfortable with doing a re-barrel on. It was customized with a Volquartsen carbon fiber barrel in a Hogue stock. The barrel was tight in the receiver but the bolt-bang method and some taps with a rubber mallet got It out.
As I was fitting the receiver to the factory Sporter stock I discovered some weird stuff. The receiver would lift and unseat at the rear when tightened down. Checking revealed some casting irregularities in the bottom surface of the lug around the stock screw hole that prevented it from sitting flush with the stock. I decided to file the lug smooth instead of modifying the stock (see pics). In the process, I noticed that the v-block bolt holes in the receiver are not centered and the v-block holes are slightly off, too. Still sorta works but not ideal.
Which leads to the bigger problem. The FJ Feddersen barrel shank is not snug-fitting in the receiver. In fact it moves around. After a conversation with Bob at FJF I did some measuring. The FJF barrel shank mic'd at .687", which they say is in spec. The VQ barrel shank measured .688" rising to a .689" small shoulder. Bob says that shank diameter is the same for all 10/22s and a brand new take-off LR barrel was also loose.
So how did this happen, I wonder? Are magnum specs different? Why does the VQ barrel fit? Anyhow, I put it back together the way it came for now. Some photos:

Very interesting. I don't want to have to tackle that project.

Re: 10/22 magnum project
I just measured 3 OE barrels and the shank is .686 on all three.
I have had aftermarket barrels be VERY tight and not want to go into the receiver, but I always used a strip emery on the barrel, rather than try to hog out the receiver. Maybe the last guy worked the receiver to fit the VQ barrel ?
Weird about the off center v-block holes?!?
If it were me, I would put the FJ barrel on and take it out and see how it shoots.
It might be fine.
Why don't you want the VQ barrel?
Good luck,
Let us know.

Re: 10/22 magnum project
Thanks for the comments.
The receiver does not look to have been opened up but I could be wrong.
I don't mind the VQ barrel but I prefer blued steel and wood. The sporter stock appealed to me as the basis for a project with the heavy-taper FJF barrel. But I'm reluctant to install a barrel that wriggles around in the receiver. It would probably be OK but but it may not be flush with the bolt face and I'm concerned it would would shoot so low as to be out of scope adjustment range due to barrel droop.
I don't care for that rubber stock. I may open up the birch stock to .920 to accommodate the VQ barrel. I do wonder how it came to be out of spec, though.

Re: 10/22 magnum project
So, on another forum, someone posted the spec tolerance of 10/22 shanks as .686" +/- .001", which puts the FJF barrel right in there. Another poster reported measurements from about .685" to .689". A Volquartsen tech wrote this in an email: "All of our barrels for the 10/22 and 10/22 Magnum are made to be just slightly oversized for an interference fit".
I'm surprised to learn that there is, apparently, such a large variance in manufacturing. Does that mean that barrels and receivers have to be hand selected for fit in the assembly process?
In any case, it is what it is. I've installed a scope that I had and Ill take it to the range to make sure it functions and check for accuracy before I do anything else with it. It has a nice trigger so it should be a fun shooter.

Re: 10/22 magnum project
Just couldn't abide the rubber stock so I opened the sporter stock to .920 and installed the VQ combo. Nice little rifle now. The reason the factory never shipped any of those may be because they are slightly out of spec with a fair amount of daylight between the stock and sides of the receiver. Some photos:

Re: 10/22 magnum project
So,
You opened up the wood stock and installed the receiver & VQ barrel from the donor gun, and all is good?
No problem with the off set v-block screws, or the loose fit receiver/barrel connection?
Just curious...........

Re: 10/22 magnum project
Yes, that's correct.
The overspec VQ barrel is tight in the receiver. The Feddersen barrel was loose. Looks like it's all good and the offset v-block holes don't seem to affect its function as it tightens up normally. I really like that forend look.
I haven't been able to get to the range yet but I will report on accuracy when I can.

Sure a nice looking setup. Looking forward to hearing about your range visit and results.

Re: 10/22 magnum Sporter project
Thank you, Bill. Just have to be tinkering with something. I have some Sporter sling hardware to add and plan to refinish the wood because it has picked up some dings. I installed this older Bushnell Sportview 4-12x40 ao scope I had sitting around. Should be fine for an accuracy test. Here's another photo:
