As I was fitting the receiver to the factory Sporter stock I discovered some weird stuff. The receiver would lift and unseat at the rear when tightened down. Checking revealed some casting irregularities in the bottom surface of the lug around the stock screw hole that prevented it from sitting flush with the stock. I decided to file the lug smooth instead of modifying the stock (see pics). In the process, I noticed that the v-block bolt holes in the receiver are not centered and the v-block holes are slightly off, too. Still sorta works but not ideal.
Which leads to the bigger problem. The FJ Feddersen barrel shank is not snug-fitting in the receiver. In fact it moves around. After a conversation with Bob at FJF I did some measuring. The FJF barrel shank mic'd at .687", which they say is in spec. The VQ barrel shank measured .688" rising to a .689" small shoulder. Bob says that shank diameter is the same for all 10/22s and a brand new take-off LR barrel was also loose.
So how did this happen, I wonder? Are magnum specs different? Why does the VQ barrel fit? Anyhow, I put it back together the way it came for now. Some photos:
