Rarly Ruger Auto with Salt Cod box

I just picked this one up and trying to find out what the experts think. As you can see on the envelope
the original owner had apparently inquired on the ETA and got the response above. On the envelope the serial number and dates were penciled down … an October date and a Nov. date. The story that I was told is that the gun was shipped in October and accordingly the Ruger time line and other time lines agree that it was a 1949 gun.
But, most interestingly, I came across this paragraph on page 50 of John’s Vintage book…..
This gun is Serial Number 2127????? You can see the faint number in the side of the COD box.
What is the group consensus on what might have taken place????
I will have to make another post with the side of the box and the passage from Dougans book

Maybe they repurposed the box for this gun?
Was 2127 a known return for a new bolt?

Yes according to John’s book as well a him entering into the discussion I started on another forum he confirmed according to Ruger records 0144 was returned and 2127 replaced it
