I purchased a used 10/22 a couple months ago. It has a wood stock and stainless barrel and the serial # puts the production in 1994. I've tried searching for another with wood stock and stainless barrel. Is it possible that it could have been a distributor exclusive? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

With what I can see, it appears to be one of the Walmart Exclusives with the 22" barrel. These are really nice rifles. Walmart dropped this Exclusive, but it can still be obtained thru Lipsey's. Don't consider myself a 10/22 expert, but that is what it looks like. I have one.

I agree that this was a Walmart exclusive and if you look on the left side of the receiver is should be stamped RIFLE. I also have one and enjoy shooting it.

Charlie,

It's my understanding that the "RIFLE" stamp was dropped on the later issued units and replaced with the standard "CARBINE" stamp. Fact or fiction?

The one I bought at Walmart about 4-5 years ago does not have either Carbine or Rifle. Just 10/22/ it has a 351- prefix.

I did not follow the later runs of this model so I am unaware of any changes on how the receiver was marked. This would make if interesting to find out if this is the only model marked Rifle and how many were made.

Mine is marked RIFLE and it has a 253 prefix. I didn't even notice the marking until I read a post somewhere about it so I checked. That post is where I read that the marking was later changed to CARBINE. I believe that the speculation was that that removed the need for Ruger to make specially stamped receivers just for this model. They could just their regularly marked (at that time) receivers.

Update: I checked one that I bought several months ago, and as ElNumeroUno points out, it is only marked 10/22. It has an 822 prefix.

I have one of the Walmart special 10/22's & it's marked RIFLE. It's a fine rifle & has dispatched more than one rabid raccoon during broad daylight. I think I paid $188 for it new.

The 253 prefix would have been one of the last marked "rifle."

Shortly after they quit marking all 10/22's with either "rifle" or "carbine"
