RSS Rescue

Post by JAYDAWG »

Found this old flat gate at a gun show yesterday. It's pretty rough, but the timing and lock up are very tight, I don't think it has been shot a ton, just not cared for. Anyway, I had never taken one apart.....until about an hour ago. :? Ran it thru the sonic cleaner and scrubbed it up with a brass brush. I figured for $375 and the condition I can't really hurt it. Now lets see if I can get it back together ;)

Cheers,
JAY

Looks like it cleaned up pretty good! Should be a youtube video on putting it back together. It really isn't that hard.

Well,
Like I said, first time taking one apart. That was the easy part........
After spending half an hour trying to get the mainspring compressed and back in to the gun,
I took the grips off of another RSS. When I cocked the hammer I saw this neat little hole in
the end of the strut and I thought, WOW if a guy would have just done this and slid a pin in
the hole then the strut & spring would all stay together and be easy to reinstall
Three bleeding fingers and two cramped thumbs later, I managed to compress the spring
over the strut AND keep the seat in place AND slide a finish nail in the little hole :D
Just like I knew what I'm doing.......the Single Six is back in action 8-) .

Cheers,
JAY

Some people sit on $.05 of knowledge like it is the treasure of Egypt. I will teach anyone $.10 worth just to prove a point...

I must admit that I've never taken one down that far.

THE REALITY..........."THAT MAINSPRING THING"............long ago. Standing in a hot non air conditioned small desert workshop, mid July, Tucson.........wondering "what the hell have I done?" Resisting the strong urge for a tall Bacardi, I took a rather thin 2x2 block of hard oak, drilled a hole large enough to accomadate the keeper hole end of the strut. After placing the strut vertically in the protected jaws of my vise, I placed the spring on the strut, put the block over it and pushed down, showing the hole into which I placed a small nail. Then taking the strut out of the vise, the block was carefully broken in half using 2 vice vice pliers and the two pieces fell off of the strut.........No need to call a friend and share Bacardi..........The simple joy of recovery after doing something stupid in the first place......... ;) 8-)
