How to build a display

Post by Charlie1022 »

Some of us have displayed several times in the past and for others who have not displayed their collections before but always wanted to let me offer some advise. One very important thing to remember is how you title your display. Make your title as brief yet as informative as possible. Check out other display pictures to help you title your display. Choose your colors of your display to go with what you are displaying to help draw attention and highlight what you are displaying . Include enough information cards as needed and make them easy to read from several feet away. Condition is also very important. Include as much information as you feel is required to inform someone about what and why you are displaying. If you check out the NRA web page under display rues it will also help you build your display.

We all learn as we build and display our collections and have fun doing it. It is also a great way to make contacts to add to and or improve your collection. I have been working on plans for my next show in Tulsa in November and had an idea on how to better display my 10/22's when I came up with a new idea that I have never seen done before that I think will really highlight my display. I will run over to a shop that sells the material I need in the morning to get started on my new idea.

So if you enjoy your collection large or small I would encourage you to dig them out of the safe and enjoy sharing them with others. It is a lot of fun and a great group of like minded people. Go for it and have some fun.

Another note is to remember is that some people that view your display may not know that much detail as an avid collector about what you are displaying so try and make your display as informative as possible about what you are displaying. The information you can provide about what you are displaying will provide the people that view it with enough information to help inform them about what you have on display. Some people will want to learn more with what you have provided and that is where you can answer their questions and that can lead to some interesting conversations and in some cases it will lead you to another piece for your collection or more information that you may not of had access to before.

Remember that what you display is not about how good of a carpenter you might be but the information that you provide about what you are displaying. It can lead to some very good times with like minded people so hope you decide to look at your collection and decide to join the fun.

To me the most important part is "JUST HAVE FUN" doing your display & showing it to others! IMHO!

I agree with Steve, just come on out and have fun. Everyone learns a lot from their first display. If you will click on the "Exhibits" Button on the Homepage and then click on the "Display Show Guidelines" ribbon toward the upper right it will tell you what Judgers look for when awarding points and this will certainly help when getting a display together.
