Don! Question about a gun in your book

Post by gunman42782 »

Don, or anyone else that knows, what is it about that New Model Blackhawk .44 Mag that makes it a Blackhawk, and not a Super Blackhawk? I had one just like it, stainless, 4 5/8 inch barrel, but mine was a Super. Never seen a New Model Blackhawk in .44 mag, other than the Flattop anniversary model. The one pictured in your book looks just like a regular 4 5/8 inch stainless Super. But it's a distributor exlusive. Just wondering what's different about it that I am missing?

In the old models it is easy to tell a SBH from a Blackhawk. There are so many configurations of the Ruger New Model, I have to rely on Ruger's roll mark identification.

You would not know these were Super BHs unless you looked at the left side roll mark.

The one I was reffering to is on page 185 and 186 of your book. Says they are 1 of 1000 for Williams Shooting Supply. I can see nothing different on them that would make them a Blackhawk instead of a Super Blackhawk, they look exactly like every Super (in that barrel length) that I have ever seen! Other than they are marked Blackhawk! Weird.

I did not get a picture of the left side of the guns (page 185 & 186). I checked with the owner of the revolvers to make sure. He confirmed they were Blackhawks & not SBHs. The only way I could tell that they were Blackhawks and not Super Blackhawk, which is roll marked on the left side "RUGER NEW MODEL BLACKHAWK" and not Super Blackhawk.

Thanks for the reply Don. I guess if you got enough money now to order a 1000 of em Ruger would mark them Security Sixes! LOL!

Gunman, I believe I own those guns. They both came from Williams Shooting Supplies. I did buy them directly from them. Many distributors do exclusives. The box clearly states Blackhawk on both. Although they have an un fluted cylinder and in .44 mag. They don't have a dragoon style grip frame. The roll mark on the frame states Blackhawk as well and not super. Ruger will do special runs on guns how ever you want to do it. Normally the minimum order would be 250 guns. When we did the RCA flattop in 44 originally it was to be a .44 mag but Ruger told us a 44 special They never did before so that was the route we went to have something produced that would be different and rare. Distributors do all the time just like Talo industries.

Except for the fixed sight Vaquero models, Ruger calls anything they make in .44 Mag. a Super Blackhawk.
The Williams gun you are referring to was the first to be made in 4-5/8", these also have a unfluted cylinder but a regular XR3-RED shape grip frame.
Shortly after this, Ruger also came out with a 5-1/2" barreled Super Blackhawk in .44 mag. with XR3-RED grip frame and fluted cylinder.
The interesting thing about the New Model Blackhawk, is that all calibers (other than the flattop models) are built on the very same Super Blackhawk sized cylinder frame, .357 Mag., .41, .30 Carbine, .45 and .44.
