Heritage Auction Maximum

Post by Coogs »

Did anyone here happen to be the person that bought a 10 1/2 Max from the Joe Bowman collection about 10 days or so ago? If you did could you please drop me a PM, I'd like to talk to you about it, Thanks for looking, Jack

I met Joe a couple times over 20 years ago. Super nice guy and some great stories to tell. I liked watching him on tv and movies too but never certain when it was him doing the fancy gun handling.

I'd be interested in hearing who may have gotten this Maxi myself!

But I had to chuckle at the comment;

" I liked watching him on tv and movies too but never certain when it was him doing the fancy gun handling."

I watched him do an exhibition several years ago. He asked for a volunteer. I quickly stepped up. I held a paper plate,, and he fired 5 or 6 wax bullets into it as I held it to my side. He then signed it, and I have it in my stuff. I too have spent time with him discussing all kinds of subjects. But he could shoot, AND do some fancy gun handling.

Yes, maybe not clear enough in what I meant. He did amazing gun handling and as I understand it a number of times was filmed doing just that but never showing his face as he was standing in for the actor supposedly doing the gun handling. So whenever I saw anyone doing fancy gun handling I attributed it to Joe even if I wasn't certain.

He worked with Sammy Davis, Jr and James Arness on their gun handling as well.
First time I met him was at the 1983 NRA show in Milwaukee. He happened to be staying at the hotel we were at and was set down for breakfast having a bowl of oat meal.
He was great with kids that would come up to the Ruger display with his card and rope tricks.

Weeeeeellll. I found it! And yes, it is now mine, tell ya why. Serial number is 600-16306. Eight (8) numbers from the last one (600-16314) It also has the new "SRM" rollmark on the frame and finally it belonged to legendary shooter/lawman, Joe Bowman. Roll marked 6/19/84 shipped in 1984 6/19/84 was the last day that any Maximums were rollmarked. There were actually only 2185 Maximums rollmarked in 1984 over two days, 6/18 and 6/19
