Ruger Double Action Revolver Grip Styles

Post by RoninPA »

Maybe this will help/assist people who come to the forum to try to find grips for their Ruger DA revolvers. I have seen people try to describe what they want but they don't seem to want to do any research themselves and end up asking questions and then trying to clarify what they want/need. The most questions seem to center around the Redhawk. I think a lot of people (novice Ruger owners/buyers maybe) must not realize that the Redhawk and the SUPER Redhawk have different styles of frames.

Ruger Double Action Revolvers have one of two different styles of grip frames:

RUGER Revolvers with a Grip FRAME (similar to a SA revolver). These grips are designed to fit and attach to the physical revolver frame. As such, grip makers are limited by the frame dimensions making it harder to design and make grips that fit the majority of shooters:
Security Six
Police Service Six
Speed Six
Redhawk

RUGER Revolvers with a Grip STUD/Grip PEG. These grips are designed to slide on and secure to a stud/peg. As such, different styles of grips are much easier to design and make, giving shooters a much wider choice grip styles:
GP-100
SUPER GP-100
SP-101
LCR/LCRx
SUPER Redhawk

In the past there were a good number of grip manufactures but sadly many that people liked (Uncle Mikes for example) do not produce them anymore and/or have gone out of the grip business and so finding NIB or gently used is getting harder and harder. Because of this, those who have the grips people want know they can price them however they want.

If I have left anything out, PLEASE let me know so we can have a good reference to help others.
