The article title "to Oudraw, Outshoot others" makes direct reference to Ruger's competition with Colt at the time who had recently introduced the Colt Scout.
I'm sure Ruger felt Colt was starting to horn into their business again by re-introducing the Peacemaker shortly after Ruger's Blackhawk came out. Then when the aluminum framed Lightweight Single-Six came out in 1956 at $63.25 it was severely outshone by the aluminum framed Colt Scout in 1957 at a $49.50 retail....of course, Colt decided to sell direct (no middle-man distributor system) in order to do that.
With the writing on the wall for the Lightweight Single-Six, Ruger began working on the Bearcat.

neat stuff, nice find and thanks for showing, reminding us, of "how it was"...yes, and duly noted as the Colts with their aluminum frame ,unlike the Rugers , the Scout could and would crack at the top rear, worked on and serviced many of those back in the early 70s in our shop,,,,,,,,weak spot in their design,,,,have NO clue what is even available to replace today , though they can be "welded", if one knows what they are doing....thanks again

This thread reminded me of a conversation that I had with Herb Glass several years ago when I was buying his "One-Of-A-Kind" inscribed and factory modified Bearcat #16. I asked him to write it down in a letter and he did.
