2017 Antelope Season

Post by doccash »

This years antelope hunt was a bucket list item for me. I have always wanted to hunt Pronghorns with a black powder cartridge rifle. This year I did just that, there were several Rugers in the car and that makes me feel better about this post. The rifle is an 1886 Winchester chambered in .38-56 wcf. The bullets were cast in a Winchester mould from the 1800s. The rifle is a special order semi deluxe. Barrel sight is special order, front sight is specified as well as the tang sight. Rifle was shipped 9-16-1891. Antelope was average at 15" in length with above average mass and was shot at 80 yards one time through the lungs. Bullet was 255 grains, 56 grains of 1.5 fg Swiss under a Walters veg fiber wad. The primer was a 215 Federal.

That is really cool hunting and taking game with that great old 1886 Winchester!! I really love and have a few of those fine old rifles myself. Thanks for posting the pic for us.

I never consider a 15" pronghorn to be just average, many with shorter horns are mounted every year,,,nice goat, nice gun

Zebra55, I thought that i replied to your post but cannot find it. We are blessed with a large number of big antelope in our little area and I have access to 150 sections of country that is not hunted. Yes, 15 inch antelope are not that common in many areas. I mount all of mine too. Thank You for the reminder, guess I'm a little spoiled. Dr. C

I'd be proud of that Winchester and antelope too! Have never had the opportunity to hunt them having never hunted outside of my home state and I sure as heck can't afford to collect Winchesters. Congratulations on a successful season!
