Pistol Rack System

Post by JAYDAWG »

Well sorry.....
You guys are stuck with me all weekend. With kids coming from out of state and work schedules I don't get my turkey dinner until Saturday night and it's PISSING rain here in the PNW, so I'm hunkered down in the shop scanning the ROCS forums and figured I'd post some stuff while taking a break from pulling the handle on the Dillon.
With zebra55's post of his new gun room (awesome) and the universal problem of running out of room in the safe, I thought I would post a pic of the pistol rack system I bought from Madhouse Designs madhousedesign.com.
No, I'm not a salesman for them, I just saw their display at a gun show an had to have it.
Check it out.
I built the magnetic strip for the mags, but the rest is theirs.

love the organized system, especially the magnetic clip holder. How secure are the guns, do you have to be careful opening and closing the door?

Zebra55,

I'm posting a few more photo's below so you can see better how it works.
The two rails attach to the top of the door & are fastened together with two stainless rods between them.
The head units slide up & down the rails and tighten with the nut on the side. They also rotate and lock in place
by pulling down on the spring loaded knob on the bottom. Each head has a tapped hole to screw in the caliber
rod of choice. The caliber rod is rubber coated.
The weight of the guns keeps it all in place nice.
The mag holders I just bought a flat 1 inch strip of aluminum stock, drilled it and screwed the magnets to it.
Don't buy the cheap magnets on ebay they don't hold a full mag. If anyone wants I will find my receipt and give them
the website and part # for the magnets that I used.

Hello Jay,
If its not to much trouble I would take the website info on the magnets. I'm going to order a few of these sets for my safes. Your safes look like Liberty models as mine are and I would like to place my shooters on these racks. It allows you to leave the pieces that "lets say" don't get shot as opposed to safe queens in place on the shelves while being able to pull the others right off the door. I like the idea, I have looked at the mesh products with pockets and haven't bit.

I really like the system, but it seem to me that they would interfere with the shelves? My safe door butts right up against the shelves. Do you have to space them to clear your shelves?

Gene,
Here is the link to the magnets I used.
http://www.kjmagnetics.com/proddetail.asp?prod=MMS-A-C

The MMS-A-C is the actual part # I used.
Like I said I had bought some that did not work (wouldn't hold a loaded mag)
so I called these guys and this is what they suggested and they work great. In fact
I put some on the underside of my shelves and they hold the 30 round stick mags
for my PC9, loaded!

O M,
You are right. The way it's made you must position the guns so they won't close against
a shelf. Doing this I could only get 6 guns hung up, so I pulled my shelves out and cut
about 1 1/2 inches off the back (as well as I can remember). This way I could hang
up more guns. But then of course I had to buy more head units and caliber rods.
The caliber rods can be used to mount a pistol almost anywhere.
Check out my side arm in my side by side....
Cheers.

Cutting the shelf .... I can see how that would solve the problem. I like the truck mount, it keeps your firearm handy and easy to get to quickly.

Hello Jay, OMC

Another application I'm considering from madhouse design is for my safes with AR;s Shotguns, Classic Rifles, which didn't allow for any handgun storage before. There are no shelves in those safes, with the addition of this system you could add several handguns.

I've used K&J in the past for certain aquarium related uses. Have had no issues with the company. Some of those Neodymium magnets are so strong they can be dangerous and I believe the right ones would hold about anything. We accidentally let two quarter size diameter 1/2" thick approximately magnets snap together on the side of a 1" glass aquarium and it shattered it. I've not thought much about their use for this purpose but I like what you did and the design of it all. Very good ideas there. My safes have built-in door pocket and pouch systems, I could see where this could hold a lot more.
