Collecting Question - consecutive serial #'s

Post by TEMIII »

Are there any "rules of thumb" for collecting when you are presented with a pair or more of consecutive # guns?

Do you evaluate the individual guns and then assign a premium for the consecutive numbers? Any thoughts on what such apremium might be?

You're going to get a pile of dissenting views on this question. Depending on the model, personally I feel a NIB or as NIB old model pair is harder to put together then most new models, I would add 10% for new models and maybe, maybe, as much as 25% for an old model pair. Just depends on what model, condition and how bad ya want them, and, well, how bad the other guy wants to sell them, Remember, something is only worth whatever someone wants to pay for it. Yeah, what Coogs said.

Also, realize that just because someone paid an asking price for something does NOT mean that anyone else will ever pay that much again.

There are no guarantees.

But then again, they may pay more! No one wants to lose money in the end but true collectors will usually pay more for the right needed gun to go into their collection....owning and enjoying owning it it it's true value. JMHO as an long time collector.

As stated earlier " You will get a lot of varying opinions" So I will add my 2 cents.

Both COOGS & FLATTOP44 are correct, but as an OLD time collector I can only tell you as I, and many other collectors may.
I am 99.9% certain that the only people interested in consecutive numbers would be collectors. The price a collector is willing to pay will be directly related to his need, rarity of the guns, and condition. If all of those conditions are meet a collector may be willing to add a 25% ,or possible more, premium. On the other hand if he already has the item or doesn't collect that type he will only be willing to pay a very small premium, or pass all together.

On the other side of the coin. If you are a collector and it fits your collection than you are probably going to keep them for a long time. And as other collectors will tell you "You just bought to soon". I have found that Rugers I purchased years ago have increased in value 300% and more. I can also tell you I recently purchased guns that I hope will go in the same direction, but I needed them for my collection.

If you are buying with the hopes of reselling than be prepared to sit on them for sometime, unless they are especially rare. You need the right collector and the right price. JMHO
